N02, Second Tube San Gotthard (2TG Tube North and Galleria di Airolo) and N02 Renovation First Tube San Gotthard (1TG Tube South), BSA Lot 1303 – Support High Voltage Protection
To enable the renovation of the existing Gotthard road tunnel – approximately 17 km long – the Federal Council, Parliament and the population have decided to build a second tube. The BSA equipment of the second tube, referred to as Tube North, will be installed between 2027 and 2030, partially in parallel with the completion of construction works. In parallel with the North Tube, the Galleria di Airolo (GdA) with a length of approximately 1 km will also be constructed, forming an integral part of the Gotthard system. Immediately after the opening of Tube North in contraflow operation, the renovation of the existing tube, referred to as Tube South, will be undertaken. The structural renovation is scheduled for 2030 to 2033. The existing BSA equipment of Tube South will be completely dismantled due to its age. The new BSA equipment will be installed partly in parallel with traffic operation and is expected to last until 2036. In its final state, the GTG will be operated in directional traffic (one lane per tube plus emergency lane) at a speed of 80 km/h. However, closure of one tube will occur regularly for maintenance and operational reasons. This lot comprises support to ensure coordinated medium and high voltage protection across all voltage levels and construction phases.
