Replacement of Ried Bridge

The Ried street crosses the Birs river between Zwingen and Laufen via two bridges dating from 1966. While the first bridge spans directly over the Birs, the second crosses a filled side channel and is only recognisable as a bridge in the existing plans. As part of the preliminary project in 2019, a replacement of the bridge over the Birs at the same location was identified as the best solution. The new bridge structure must meet the increased requirements of motorised traffic, including heavy goods vehicles in opposing directions and exceptional transports, as well as slow-moving traffic. Care will be taken to minimise traffic disruption during construction and to create a durable, low-maintenance structure. In order to minimise the impact on traffic and utility lines, a separate utility line bridge will be constructed a few metres downstream prior to the construction of the bridge structure.
