University Hospital Zurich (USZ) is currently heated by district heating. For heat supply, district steam and pressurized hot water (PHW) from the energy supplier Entsorgung und Recycling Zürich (ERZ) are available. The district steam network will be shut down in 2034, which means that the heat supply to buildings must in future be provided entirely via PHW. Already today, some buildings are heated via PHW; domestic hot water preparation (DHW) is also partly covered by the PHW network. The PHW network has several heat transfer stations, each equipped with multiple heat exchangers. The total thermal output of the network exceeds 30 MW. However, not all buildings are currently fully connected to the PHW network; some continue to be supplied partly or entirely by district steam. The new heating curve is binding. The temperature difference between flow and return (FL/RL) must in future be at least 40 K (today: at least 20 K). Furthermore, the return temperature must not exceed 50 °C. These requirements cannot currently be met; the PHW flow temperature is also currently consistently higher than provided for in the agreed heating curve. In addition, USZ has an energy recovery network (ERN) which currently does not function as intended in heating mode. The cause of the malfunction has not yet been definitively clarified.
