Urban Space Grüze Railway Station
The City of Winterthur aims for a redesign of the public space in the vicinity of Grüze railway station that reflects the importance of the future mixed-use urban district. Currently, the area is spatially fragmented by railway lines, characterized by industrial and commercial buildings as well as public infrastructure facilities, and is simultaneously at the beginning of a significant development: With the transformation and expansion of Grüze railway station, the planned Winterthur Grüze Nord station and the new bus bridge (Leonie-Moser Bridge, « Grüze Crossing » project), a second major interchange hub for public transport in Winterthur is being created. The area near the station will be transformed, based on the design plan « Grüze Surroundings », into a new urban district by approximately 2040. Planning has already begun on some sites in private and public ownership. The urban space at Grüze railway station will gain in importance as a connection for pedestrian and bicycle traffic for neighboring districts and the wider surrounding area, including with the implementation of the urban cycle route Hegi and a combined pedestrian and bicycle connection (combined underpass « PU Kombi »).
