Planning Competitions – Canton Ticino

Ticino, Switzerland's only fully Italian-speaking canton, is a distinctive competition region. A strong architectural culture, the Ticino School with figures like Mario Botta, Aurelio Galfetti and Luigi Snozzi, has created a tradition of quality planning competitions. Lugano, Bellinzona and Locarno are the most active clients.

Competitions are almost exclusively in Italian. Typical projects include school buildings, public buildings, lakeside design and tourist infrastructure. International participation from nearby northern Italy is standard practice.

The Accademia di architettura Mendrisio (USI) is a prestigious architecture school that strongly shapes regional competition culture. Current priorities include climate adaptation of public spaces, revitalisation of lakeside promenades and innovative educational buildings.
