Planning Competitions – Canton Solothurn

Solothurn canton has one of Switzerland's highest competition rates relative to its population. The cantonal capital Solothurn, widely known as the most beautiful Baroque city in Switzerland, along with Olten, Grenchen, Balsthal and Dornach, are regular clients. School buildings and historic building renovation are in the foreground, with heritage conservation playing an important role in urban projects.

Solothurn relies on open project competitions under SIA 142 and emphasises urban quality. Energy renovation of public buildings and transformation of brownfield sites are growing themes.

Proximity to Basel and Bern attracts supra-regional architecture firms from both agglomerations. The canton's industrial heritage, with Grenchen as a former watchmaking centre and Dornach with the Goetheanum, regularly generates interesting conversion projects.
