Lucerne is central Switzerland's cultural and tourism hub and an active competition venue. The city of Lucerne with its historic townscape regularly issues projects navigating heritage conservation and contemporary architecture. Sursee, Emmen, Kriens and Horw are further active communities in the rapidly growing Lucerne agglomeration.

Lucerne canton competitions cover school buildings, public buildings and tourist and cultural infrastructure. The selective study mandate (SIA 143) is established as the standard for urban projects. Open project competitions under SIA 142 are used by municipalities and for high-profile public projects.

The University of Applied Sciences Lucerne (HSLU) is an important client for educational buildings. The KKL concert hall by Jean Nouvel and the Kunstmuseum Lucerne set architectural benchmarks for the region. National firms participate regularly.
