Planning Competitions – Canton Bern

Bern is Switzerland's second-largest canton by area and one of the most active in planning competitions. As a bilingual canton (German/French), competitions are often issued in both languages. The federal city of Bern, Biel/Bienne, Thun and Burgdorf are regular clients, especially for school buildings and renovation of public buildings.

Bern canton frequently requires selective procedures under SIA 143 for public projects. Competitions from the Bernese Jura and the bilingual Biel agglomeration regularly appear in French. The University of Bern and the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) are recurring clients for educational buildings.

In the Bernese Oberland, tourism, alpine infrastructure and renovation of existing buildings dominate procurement. In the Mittelland and Seeland regions, housing developments, schools and community centres are most prevalent. Bern offers a remarkable breadth of construction tasks with firms from across German-speaking Switzerland competing regularly.
