Basel-City, despite its small size, is one of Switzerland's architecturally most significant competition venues. The city of Basel, with its internationally renowned museums (Kunstmuseum, Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely), Art Basel and leading pharmaceutical companies (Roche, Novartis), has a developed culture of high-quality architecture competitions.
Basel is known for demanding, often international competitions. Open competitions under SIA 142 and selective study mandates under SIA 143 are equally common. For strategic urban planning tasks, test planning and two-stage procedures are frequently used.
Proximity to the German and French borders makes Basel a tri-regional competition venue, with many procedures open to firms from Alsace, the Black Forest and southern Baden. Current priorities include Novartis and Roche campus developments and school renovation.
